Travis Holmes Sets Steals Record As VMI Romps, 125-95, Over Bridgewater

LEXINGTON, Va. - Sophomore guard Travis Holmes (Charlotte, N.C.), who entered the game third in the country in steals, collected a school and Big South record 11 steals to lead VMI over Bridgewater College, 125-95, Thursday night at Cameron Hall.

Holmes scored 17 points and joined four other Keydets in double figures scoring as VMI notched its eighth win of the season to move past last season's win total.

Joining Travis Holmes in double figures was junior forward Reggie Williams, who bounced back from a 17-point game Monday night against CCU to lead the Keydets in scoring with 37 points and a career-high 10 assists.

Other VMI double figures scorer were senior forward Matt Murrer (21), and Chavis Holmes (20).

VMI, the nation's leading scoring team, surpassed the 100-point mark for the seventh time at home and tenth time this season.

The Eagles (4-9) shot a Cameron Hall record 72.7% from the floor hitting 40 of 55 shot attempts, all from two-point range.

Junior forward Josh Fox paced BC with 17 points followed by freshman forward Dominic Trawick who scored 16 points.

After a 16-16 tie, VMI (8-12) took the lead for good four minutes into the game on a Dusty Pflugner layup. The Keydets gradually built the advantage throughout the half and took a 64-59 lead into the lockeroom. A Fox dunk at the 16:23 mark cut the lead to 73-59 with 16:23 left, but the Keydets reeled off a 7-2 spurt to put VMI ahead by 21 points and the lead fell below 20 points only briefly at the seven-minute mark.

Keydet senior guard Jack Castleberry led the team in rebounding with a career-high eight boards and sophomore guard Chavis Holmes turned in a career- best nine steals.

VMI will resume Big South Conference action Monday night at UNC Asheville at 7:00 p.m.

Head Coach Duggar Baucom - "I'm not overly pleased. I thought we came out and kind of played the opponent rather than playing the game. A D-III team comes in here and we think we can be lackluster in our effort I thought in the first half. For them to force 19 turnovers, that's just not taking care of the ball very well. We played in spurts, and that was good, and Travis getting 11 steals, I thought he could have had 15. Reggie Williams shot it a lot better from three. We need him to do that. His ten assists was pretty strong. Bridgewater played very well. They had good sound game plan and they got the ball around the basket and didn't shoot a three for the game and they rebounded well. We had a lot of open looks and a lot shots that went in and out tonight. Hopefully those will fall, but a win is a win."
