VMI Basketball Shatters Record Book In 156-95 Win Over Virginia Intermont

LEXINGTON, Va. - Junior forward Reggie Williams scored a school-record 45 points and VMI tallied a school and Big South single-game record 156 points in a 156-95 win over Virginia Intermont Wednesday night at Cameron Hall.

Twenty-four school records were broken on the night including points in a half (78), steals in a game (35), assists (39), three-pointers in a game (21), and highest margin of victory (61 points).

Career-highs were also set by sophomore twin brothers Chavis Holmes (31) and Travis Holmes (26). Senior forward Matt Murrer chipped in 24 points for the Keydets.

VMI never trailed in the game that was delayed one hour because the Virginia Intermont bus was backed up in northbound traffic on I-81.

It didn't seem to worry the Keydets as VMI raced off to a 6-0 lead and never relinquished the advantage. Williams scored the game's first two baskets and reached the 1,000 point career mark.

The Keydets led 18-16 with 13:54 left in the first half, but then outscored the Cobras,60-37, the remainder of the half to set a new school record with most points in a half.

VMI forced VIC into 48 turnovers and converted them into 74 points. The Keydets also generated a school record 21 3-point field goals and generated 79 bench points on the night.

"It was one thing to score the points, but it was how we scored them that pleased me," said head coach Duggar Baucom. "We created them off our defense because the guys worked so hard and they shared the ball so well. 39 assists is pretty unbelievable.

Williams hit a school record 18 field goals on 26 attempts including four of nine beyond the arc.

"I'm pleased for what Reggie did. He deserves that because he has been our hardest worker in preseason and he deserves everything he gets. I'm proud of him."

"Matt Murrer came to life and made six three and the twins were unbelievable. And Adam Lonon to have 11 assists as a freshman is pretty special," added Baucom.

Ron Orlenas led Virginia Intermont with 21 points and Courtney White added 15 points.

VMI evened its mark to 2-2 while Virginia Intermont fell to 1-4.

The Keydets next face Southern Virginia next Monday night at Cameron Hall at 7:00 p.m.
