LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers continue to have the Keydets number as they defeated VMI 2-0 in front of a big crowd at Patchin Field. Coastal netted scores in each half of play as they picked up their second conference win of the season and seventh overall. The Keydets battled hard for 90 minutes, but were unable to slow down the Chanticleer's offense.

With the win, Coastal improves to 7-6-1 overall, and evens its Big South record at 2-2. With the loss, the Keydets fall to 2-11-1, and 0-5 in conference play. Coastal has now defeated VMI in all seven matches between the two schools.

After nearly a full half of scoreless action, the Chanticleers broke through in the 44th minute when junior defender Patrick Robertson headed in a corner kick from teammate Djamel Bekka, propelling his team to a 1-0 lead just before the half.

In the opening session, Coastal fired off 13 shots but were only able to yield one tally. VMI senior goalie Thomas Upton stopped five of those shots to keep the score within a goal.

Coastal picked right back up in the second half, however, and increased its lead when junior Mkhokheli Dube one-touched a pass from Robert Holstein in the 67th minute that found its way past Upton.

The Keydets appeared to cut the lead to one with a few minutes remaining when Mike Lloyd headed in a cross in front of the net, but was whistled for offsides to negate the score.

In the contest, Coastal outshot the Keydets 23-8, and held a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks. Both teams committed 11 fouls in the game.

Upton finished the game with eight saves in goal for the Keydets, while Coastal keeper Jeremy Wolfgang picked up his third shutout of the season.

VMI will host its final game of the season at Patchin Field on Thursday, Oct. 19 when they welcome in Big South opponent Birmingham Southern. Game time is set for a 4 p.m. start.
