Winthrop Hands VMI Basketball 69-44 Setback

ROCK HILL, S.C.- VMI could do nothing to stop the Winthrop Eagle basketball express Monday night.

Winthrop picked up its seventh consecutive victory with a 69-44 rout over VMI Monday night at the Winthrop Coliseum.

The Eagles placed three players in double figures and were led by James Shuler with 15 points on four of five shooting. Phillip Williams added 14, 12 of which came in the first half and jump started the Eagle offense. Otis Daniels chipped in 10 points and grabbed a game-high seven rebounds.

Winthrop (16-5, 7-1) began to pull away with four minutes remaining in the opening period on Torrell Martin's three-pointer to put Winthrop up 22-14. The Eagles closed the half with a 12-4 run to lead 34-18 at the break.

VMI (5-13, 0-8) tied the game at 4-4 and was never able to draw closer than two points the rest of the way as Winthrop pulled away to a commanding lead.

Reggie Williams led the Keydets with 14 points and Tim Allmond added 10.

Winthrop converted on 59 percent of its shots from the field compared to VMI's 35 percent. Winthrop is now 13-0 on the season when holding their opponent below 40 percent shooting.

VMI continues its three-game road swing at Coastal Carolina Saturday. The Eagles will return to action next Monday night when they host UNC Asheville at 7:00 p.m.
