EMMITSBURG, Md.- An Austin Williams goal in the 38th minute proved to be the only offense VMI needed, as the Keydets won their second game of the season, a 2-0 decision over host Mount St. Mary's on a rainy Wednesday afternoon.
Williams tallied his first goal of the season for VMI (2-1) after Charles Nweke drove down the left side of the field and unleashed a perfect cross to Williams, who buried the shot in the back of the net.
Mount St. Mary's (0-2-1) had scoring opportunities throughout the contest; however, VMI keeper Thomas Upton made four saves to preserve his first shutout of the season. MSM keeper Gladimir Elysee also made four saves, playing the entire contest as well.
The Keydets put the icing on the cake just before the game ended, as Edward Mills scored his first goal of the season, the assist again coming from Nweke. In the 90th minute, Nweke fed the ball in to Mills, who blasted a shot from 10 yards out that beat Elysee. Through three games, 10 different players have scored goals for VMI.
VMI held a 13-12 advantage in shots and a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal. Mount St. Mary's took six corner kicks to VMI's four, while MSM was called for 20 fouls and VMI for 17.
The Keydets return to action Saturday afternoon, when they host Manhattan. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Patchin Field.
