JMU Takes Down Men's Soccer, 2-0

LEXINGTON, Va.- A first-half goal by freshman Frank D'Agostino proved to be the game-winner, as James Madison handed VMI only their second loss of the season, a 2-0 decision Thursday afternoon at Patchin Field.

The Dukes (5-0) got the scoring started in the 21st minute, when D'Agostino found the back of the net after a feed from Mark Totten found him on the left-hand side of the box. A second-half goal in the 66th minute put the game out of reach, as Bobby Humphrey connected on a pass from Denny Fulk, driving the shot past a diving Thomas Upton for the goal.

"We can't have individuals not step up and perform at their peak," said VMI head men's soccer coach Stephen Ross. "We worked hard as a team, we just had some guys that came up short of their game, so we need to go back to what they're capable of doing. But, our guys will respond to it, they weren't happy with the outcome either. We know we can play with these teams, and JMU was good, but we weren't so out-manned that we couldn't play with them."

VMI had scoring opportunities throughout, notching 10 shots in the game. However, the Keydets could not get a shot past JMU keeper Kevin Trapp, who made three saves. JMU finished with 12 shots, while the VMI keeper Upton made four saves in the contest.

The contest remained tight throughout with a lot of physical play. Twenty-nine fouls were called in the match, and three yellow cards issued.

Most all of the statistical categories were even also, indicative of the level of play. The Dukes were called for three more fouls (16-13) and the Keydets took seven corner kicks to JMU's five. Each team was whistled for two offsides.

The Keydets return to action Saturday morning, when they host Bluefield College. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Patchin Field.
