Record-Setting Day as Men's Soccer Defeats Wofford, 3-0

LEXINGTON, Va.- The VMI men's soccer team scored their 10th win of the season Saturday afternoon, shutting out Wofford 3-0 in non-conference action at Patchin Field.

Two seniors scored the Keydets' (10-8-1) first two goals on Senior Day, as Austin Williams tallied in the tenth minute from an assist from senior Ryan King, and Kyle Clark pushed the score to 2-0 in the 26th minute unassisted. Sophomore Charles Nweke added his 12th goal of the season in the 72nd minute giving the Keydets' the 3-0 lead.

"In a game that big, when you really want to win the game to get the record, a lot of times it's hard to focus on what you need to do to win the game," said VMI head coach Stephen Ross. "We started out a little slow in the first few minutes, but once we settled in, we put some passes together. Austin stepped up and scored a nice goal, and I was pleased with the way that we played the rest of the game. We created some good opportunities, and put some of those opportunities away. It was nice that our seniors got to finish their playing career at Patchin Field with all 10 of our seniors on the field."

In the contest, VMI broke the school records for wins in a season with 10, goals scored in a season with 44, and shutouts in a season with five. Today's shutout against Wofford (3-15-1) came as freshman John Sollock manned the VMI goal, notching his first shutout of the season.

Joey Taylor and Russ Sandifer each played 45 minutes in goal for the Terriers, as Sandifer made two saves in the first half and Taylor made one save in the second period.

VMI outshot their opponents 14-11, while each team took six corner kicks, made three saves and was whistled for nine fouls.

The Keydets' will next take the field on Thursday afternoon, when they take on Coastal Carolina in the first round of the Big South Conference Championship. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. EST, and fans can follow the game using StatCast at www.BigSouthSports.com.
