HIGH POINT, N.C.- Two VMI goals in the game's opening seven minutes was more than High Point could handle, as the Keydets notched their first Big South Conference win with a 3-1 decision Saturday afternoon.
Charles Nweke got the Keydets (5-4-1, 1-1-1 Big South) on the board just five minutes into the game, scoring his seventh goal of the season on a header off of a pass from Parker Thurman. Rory Page scored the eventual game-winner just one minute later, scoring his third goal of the season on a diagonal shot from 15 yards out after a pass from Kyle Clark.
"Today I really feel like was one of the first times this season that we really put it all together," said VMI head coach
Stephen Ross. "We came out quick and created a number of opportunities early, then we got hit with a rainstorm in the middle of the game. But everyone came out and executed our game plan and we played one of our best games of the season."
High Point (4-6-0, 0-3-0 Big South) answered in the ninth minute, when Josh Windley found the back of the net after a rebound off of a header by Lane Miller.
The Keydets took a 2-1 lead into halftime, as neither team could connect after the opening flurry. Finally, 20 minutes into the second period, VMI's Austin Williams notched his fourth goal of the season off an assist by Nweke to bring the score to 3-1.
VMI keeper Thomas Upton earned his fourth win of the season, turning away three Panther shots. High Point's Chris Michener made two second-half saves in goal for the Panthers.
High Point finished with a narrow 12-11 shot advantage, while making three corner kicks to the Keydets' two.
VMI returns to action Tuesday afternoon, when they host cross-town rival Washington & Lee. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Patchin Field.
