LYNCHBURG, Va. - Liberty University held visiting VMI to a school record for fewest points allowed against a Division I opponent as Liberty downed the Keydets, 66-46, in Big South Conference action at the Vines Center on Tuesday evening.
The 46 points scored by the Keydets tied a school record as Liberty also held UNC Asheville to 46 points in a 46-42 loss to the Bulldogs in the semifinals of the 1998 Big South Basketball Championship on February 27.
The Keydets matched their season low of 46 points scored in the season opener in a loss to Washington State.
VMI (3-13, 1-5 BSC) jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead as jumpers by Radee Skipworth (Sr., 6-6, Hershey, Pa.) and Matt Murrer (Fr., 6-7, Richmond, Va.) gave the Keydets an early four-point advantage. Liberty (7-11, 4-2 BSC) tied the game at the 14:50 mark as David Dees (Fr., 6-5, Dayton, Ohio) converted on an old fashion three-point play, tying the game at 6-6.
The contest remained close over the next seven minutes of action as neither team held more than a three-point lead. However, Liberty strung together an 18-5 run over the final seven minutes of the period to head into the locker room with an 11-point lead at the break, 34-23.
The Flames continued their run in the first seven minutes of the second half as a pair of free throws by Dees capped a 13-4 run to start the second half and open up a 20-point lead, 47-27. The margin remained the same over the final 13 minutes of the game with VMI cutting the lead under 20 points on just one occasion.
The Flames were paced by Dees, who received his first career start this evening, as the rookie netted 22 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the field, including 3-of-4 from three-point range and a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line. Larry Blair (Fr., 6-2, Charlotte, N.C.) followed with 10 points, while Brian Woodson (Jr., 6-3, Herndon, Va.) came off the bench to lead the squad with seven boards.
The Keydets had just one double-figure scorer as Murrer recorded 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the field, while Richard Little (Sr., 5-10, Ft. Washington, Md.) followed with eight points. Tim Allmond (Jr., 6-9, Fredericksburg, Va.) helped the Keydets win the battle of the boards, 39-33, with his game-high eight rebounds.
Radee Skipworth had his double figures scoring strak snapped at 25 games after being limited to seven points.
VMI will face Coastal Carolina Monday at Cameron Hall at 7:00 p.m.
