LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Lehigh men's lacrosse team outscored VMI in the third quarter, 4-1 to break open a 7-5 halftime game en route to a 16-8 victory over the Keydets at the W&L Astroturf Field on Saturday evening.

The teams played an even first quarter as VMI freshman midfielder Tony Cavalero (Annandale, Va./ Annandale) scored first to put VMI (0-3) on top. Lehigh's sophomore attackman Andrew Lucas scored to knot the game at one with 4:30 left in the opening stanza.

The two teams combined to score 10 second quarter goals, with the Mountain Hawks (3-1) scoring six of them. Junior attackman Leo McInerney (Syracuse, N.Y./ Marcellus) scored three of VMI's second quarter goals, two of which came on extra-man opportunites. Lehigh scored on two man-up situations in the second quarter. The Mountain Hawks went to the locker room up, 7-5.

Lehigh freshman midfielder Mike Moran scored two goals in the third quarter as the Mountain Hawks stretched their lead to 11-6.

The Mountain Hawks scored five more goals in the final stanza, with two coming from both Lucas and sophomore attackman Greg Morin, as Lehigh eased to the eight-goal win.

Lucas and Moran both scored four goals for the Mountain Hawks. The Keydets were led by McInerney's three goals and two tallies from sophomore midfielder Gabe McCaig (Painted Post, N.Y./ Corning West).

Lehigh outshot VMI, 49-20 for the game.

VMI opens up play in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) next Saturday, hosting Canisius at Patchin Field with a 1 p.m. face-off. Lehigh will play at Duke on Tuesday afternoon at 1:00.
