Lexington, Va. -- The Greater Toronto Express used an 18-6 run at the beginning of the second half to defeat the VMI basketball team, 77-63 in an exhibition game held at Cameron Hall on Saturday afternoon.
GT Express took an early 11-4 lead, before the Keydets scored the following nine points to take a 13-11 lead with 13:31 left in the opening half. Through the rest of the first half, the game experienced seven ties and five lead changes as the GT Express took a 34-33 lead into halftime.
GT Express forward Shane Nicley scored 11 of his teams' points in the 18-6 run that stretched the lead to 52-39 with 12:28 left in the game. The Keydets cut the lead to nine on three separate occasions, but could get no closer as GT Express took the 14-point win.
VMI was paced by senior forward Radee Skipworth (Hershey, Pa./ Hershey), who scored 18 points and grabbed six rebounds. Freshman guard Fred Robinson (Washington, D.C./ Montrose Christian) scored 17 points for the Keydets, connecting on five three-point shots.
Nicley led GT Express in scoring with 23 points. Forward Dan Zapior chipped in with 16 points.
GT Express was 22 of 26 from the free throw line, while Keydets were two of seven.
"This was a good test for us," said VMI head coach Bart Bellairs. "We relied too much on our outside game and we learned that we can't dribble as much. We need to get everybody healthy to be able to do our regular things and get our rotation down."
VMI will begin its regular season on Thursday, Nov. 20 as the Keydets face Washington State in the Top of the World Classic in Fairbanks, Alaska. Tip-off will be at 12:30 a.m. The tournament will run through Sunday, November 23.
