MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - The VMI men's soccer team closed out their regular season, Saturday, dropping a 5-0 decision to The College of Charleston at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant.
Jeremy Gold and Sage Martina both scored two goals apiece to carry the Cougars (11-3-3, 5-2-0 SoCon) to the victory.
The Keydets (4-14, 0-7 Big South) fell behind 1-0 after Gold followed up his own missed shot and sent it into the net at 3:59 for the game's first score. Martina added the assist on the play.
Martina and Gold reversed positions next when Martina netted the goal off the Gold assist at 9:16. Just four minutes later, Gold scored again off the Ricardo Diaz Granados assist at 13:41.
Martina used a Ben Hollingsworth assist at 39:29 to score the fourth Cougar goal and end the first half.
The Cougars padded the lead in the second half when Jeff Files took the assist in from Hollingsworth at 76:33.
VMI will travel to Radford, Va. Thursday to begin play in the Big South Conference Tournament.
The Keydets will enter the tournament as the No. 8 seed and battle No. 1 seed Coastal Carolina in the first round.
