Senior punter Brent Barth (Scottsdale, Arizona) capped off his standout VMI football career by being named to the Associated Press third team All-America squad Wednesday.
Barth, who ranked third in the nation in punting in 2002, becomes VMI football's first AP postseason All-American since running back Thomas Haskins was named to five teams in 1996.
A first team All-Southern Conference selection in November (VMI's first as a punter), Barth set a new Southern Conference and school record for highest season average when he posted 47.4 yards per punt. He had 13 punts inside the 20-yard line and booted a long of 66 yards against Western Carolina on Nov. 2. During the season, Barth logged punts of 60 or more yards in eight games. He averaged a season-high 55.5 yards per punt against Wofford on October 12.
An economics and business major, Barth finished his VMI career with a school record 42.1 yards per punt and finished #1 in yardage with 11,438 yards. He also holds the record for longest punt in a game when he punted a 73-yarder against Appalachian State in 2000.
Barth was also selected third team All-America by The Sports Network on Friday.
