Marcello is in his fourth year at the Institute, joining VMI after two years at UNC Asheville where he began as Director of Athletic Communications before being promoted to Assistant Athletic Director.
After being hired in the summer of 2022, Marcello was promoted to
Associate Athletic Director for External Relations in September of 2023, adding oversight of marketing, ticketing and corporate sponsorships to his duties. Additionally, Marcello has served as sports administrator for Men's Lacrosse, Women's Water Polo, Rifle, and Women's Soccer and is a member of the VMI Athletics Senior Leadership Team.
In his time in Lexington, Marcello has driven efforts to increase revenue through corporate partnerships and ticketing. Marcello's team has consistently increase the VMI Athletics brand and exposure, collaborating with accounts such as NCAA FCS, NCAA Baseball, various conference offices and even the NCAA. Under Marcello, the external team has brought a new level of visibility to the department, broadcasting Men's Lacrosse for the first time in the spring of 2023. In the spring of 2025, Marcello's team was able to broadcast multiple events on the same day, another first for the department.
In addition to partnering with local media for a VMI Athletics radio show, Marcello and his team have worked with local and regional companies to sponsor the Keydets both in-venue and on the air, all while maintaining brand identity. Additionally, Marcello works daily with Institute Marketing and Communications and has served on both senior-level hiring committees and various Institute working groups.
In 2025, Marcello's team launched "
Moe" the mascot logo, giving Athletics and the Institute it's first official mascot mark.
Prior to VMI, Marcello was hired by UNC Asheville in November of 2020 as Director of Athletic Communications, before being elevated to Assistant AD for Communications just 10 months later. In addition to serving as the primary contact for men's basketball, Marcello served as sport supervisor for Women's Soccer and was a member of the Senior Leadership Team.
Before Asheville, Marcello worked as a Media Relations Assistant at Wofford College. In 2018-19, Marcello oversaw the communications efforts for a Men's Basketball program that would go undefeated in conference play, attain its first ever national ranking, and win its first ever game in the NCAA Tournament. Along the way, Marcello coordinated the media requests for National Coach of the Year Mike Young and Lou Henson National Player of the Year Fletcher Magee.
Graduating with his bachelor's in broadcast journalism (VCU) in 2013, Marcello earned his Master's Degree in Sport Management in 2017 (Millersville) and would go on to work as a Media Relations Assistant for the Southern Conference from 2017-18.
A native of Mechanicsville, Virginia, Marcello resides in Fairfield with his wife Kacie and their two sons.
