Pierce named to VMI Basketball coaching staff

LEXINGTON, Va. – VMI Head Basketball Coach Andrew Wilson announced Monday the hiring of Tyler Pierce as an Assistant Coach on his staff ahead of the 2026-27 season.
 
Pierce comes to the Institute by way of his alma mater Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin, where he served as an Assistant Coach and helped lead the program to a 40-13 record and 26-6 mark in league play over the past two seasons. Assisting with recruiting, scouting, player development and practice planning, he contributed to the program's first league title since 2010.
 
Among his coaching accomplishments at the school involved the development of Division III All-American Ryan Johnson through individual skill development and game preparation.
 
"I'm very excited to add Tyler to our coaching staff for the upcoming season," Wilson said. "He has a winning background and is coming from a very successful program at Carthage College where he played a major role in their success. Tyler is hungry for this opportunity and will bring great value to our program as we look to elevate the program within the Southern Conference."
 
Prior to Carthage College, Pierce served as an Assistant Coach at Elmhurst College in Elmhurst, Illinois, from 2020-24. He helped the team reach the 2022 NCAA DIII National Championship game following a 27-7 season and CCIW tournament title.
 
During this time, he also served as an Assistant Director of Teams at M14 Hoops based in Naperville, Illinois, where he oversaw recruitment, hiring and training of the coaching staff.
 
Since 2014, he has served as a Trainer and AAU Coach for a 17U Adidas Gold/National 1 Team training athletes across positions, skill levels and age groups.
 
As a student-athlete at Carthage College from 2009-13, he became a 1,000-Point Scorer and four-year varsity starter helping the team to a CCIW title and NCAA Sweet 16 appearance. He was also a two-time All-CCIW honoree.
 
He graduated from Carthage College in 2013 with a bachelor's degree in exercise sport science before going on to achieve a master's degree in special education.
