Cross Country resumes action at Tryon Western NC XC Showcase

LEXINGTON, Va. – The VMI men's and women's cross country teams return to action Friday, Sept. 25, traveling to Mill Spring, North Carolina, for the Tryon Western NC XC Showcase. The meet is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Tryon International Equestrian Center.

The Keydets enter the meet coming off a strong showing at the Shenandoah Twilight on Sept. 11 in Winchester, where both teams finished near the top of their respective fields.

The VMI women captured the team title, totaling 31 points to finish ahead of eight other programs. Senior Jillian Sisk led the way by winning the individual 5K in a personal-best 18:12.5, while junior Reagan Gilman finished third in 18:51.5.

Samantha Layton added an eighth-place finish in 20:27.2, followed by freshman Caroline Swinson in ninth at 20:28.5 and Lukah Sandine in 10th at 20:33.1 to round out the Keydets' scoring five. Evelyn Anderson, Alexis Blue and Natalia Dias also competed for VMI.

On the men's side, the Keydets placed second out of 10 teams with 48 points. Senior Patrick Lowry paced VMI with a sixth-place finish in the 6K at 20:22.1, while freshman Zachary Schubert finished eighth at 20:23.5 and sophomore Cameron Lambert was ninth at 20:26.7.

Timothy Renquist and freshman Bryce Edmonson rounded out VMI's scoring five with 12th- and 13th-place finishes, respectively. William Byrnes, Camden Gonzales, Colin Crenshaw, Peter Fiorillo and Elijah Savoie also competed for the Keydets.

Friday's meet brings VMI back to Mill Spring, the site of the upcoming Southern Conference Championships on Oct. 31. The Tryon Western NC XC Showcase will give the Keydets an opportunity to continue building momentum early in the season as both squads prepare for the championship portion of the schedule.

Following Friday's competition, VMI will return to Richmond for the Richmond Invitational on Oct. 2 before competing at the Panorama Farms Invitational in Charlottesville on Oct. 16. The Keydets will then return to Mill Spring for the Southern Conference Championships on Oct. 31.
