Football opens SoCon play at Samford

LEXINGTON, Va. – The VMI football team will look to start conference play on the right foot as the Keydets travel to Birmingham, Alabama, Saturday to face Samford University.
 
Kick-off is set for a 3:30 p.m. EDT start at Pete Hanna Stadium.

The Keydets (0-4) are coming off a 27-24 overtime loss at the hands of Davidson College this past Saturday in Davidson, North Carolina. VMI rallied to tie the game at 24-24 with under a minute to play in the fourth quarter after a 75-yard touchdown pass from Ian Reynolds to Halim Hardnett, but a costly fumble on its possession in extra time allowed the host team to escape with a three-point victory.
 
Through four games, VMI safety Nic Land leads the team with 29.0 tackles on the season while fellow safety EJ Wilborne ranks second with 20 takedowns.
 
About the Bulldogs (0-3)
Like the Keydets, Samford has played a difficult schedule to this point after falling to North Alabama on the road and Southern Illinois at home by a close 22-18 score. This past weekend, the Bulldogs traveled to No. 12-ranked Tennessee Tech and fell by a 45-19 score in Cookeville, Tennessee.
 
Gabarri Johnson has completed 62 of 117 passes for nearly 650 yards after three games averaging 215 passing yards per contest. Ken Cherry leads the team with 63 rushing yards while Marquise Henderson leads the Bulldogs with nine receptions for 218 yards averaging 24.2 yards per catch and 109.00 yards per game.
 
All-Time Series (3-10)
The Keydets look to snap a four-game losing streak to the Bulldogs when the schools meet Saturday as VMI last won in 2021. VMI did win three straight in the series from 2019-21 in a series that dates back to 2001.
