Keydets tripped up at Davidson in overtime

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Looking to pick up a big win on the road, the VMI football team fell to host Davidson in overtime as the Wildcats prevailed by a 27-24 score Saturday afternoon at Davidson College Stadium in Davidson, North Carolina. 
 
With the loss, the Keydets fall to 0-4 on the season while the Wildcats improve to 2-2.
 
In a high-scoring first quarter, Davidson got on the board first with a field goal on their opening possession before VMI countered with a touchdown when Cole Varner took the ball around the left side for a 40-yard touchdown rush to put the Keydets up 7-3.
 
After holding Davidson to a punt, the Keydets rolled down the field to set up a one-yard TD scamper by sophomore quarterback Ian Reynolds to put VMI up 14-3 going into the second quarter.
 
Midway through the second quarter, Davidson cut the deficit to 14-10 when QB Casey Bullock connected with Alani Ajigbotosho for a 32-yard reception. With under two minutes left before halftime, the Wildcats advanced down the field and Bullock again threw a touchdown reception when Jacary Lightsey was found open behind the Keydet secondary to put Davidson up 17-14.
 
Unfazed, the Keydets took the ball with only 49 seconds left before the half and rallied to set up a 49-yard field goal by junior Jack Joyce to allow both teams to go into the break knotted up at 17-all.
 
Both teams waited until the final few minutes of the game to score again as Davidson pulled ahead 24-17 on a one-yard rush by Bullock with only 1:03 left in regulation.
 
Again facing adversity, the Keydets continued to fight and Reynolds found Halim Hardnett open across the middle and Hardnett outrun the coverage for a 75-yard touchdown reception to force overtime with only 38 seconds left. The catch was VMI's first touchdown reception of the season.
 
In overtime, the Keydets held the Wildcats to a field goal to put Davidson up 27-24, but the Keydets fumbled the ball on its second down when Traveion Slaughter rushed around the left corner and was hit by Davidson's Hayden Meese, who recovered the ball to seal the home win for the Wildcats.
