Fall Camp Report: Defensive Line

LEXINGTON, Va. - Throughout fall camp, VMI Athletics will do a Q&A session with the offensive and defensive position groups in addition to special teams.

Today's report is on the status of the defensive line and how it is preparing for the Idaho State season opener coming up on August 29.

First-year Defensive Line Coach Hakeem Yaya provides his thoughts on Fall Camp and how the big bruisers are coming along.

Defensive Line Fall Camp Report 2026

 1. How would you assess how Fall Camp has gone for the defensive line?
Coach Yaya: The defensive line has had a productive camp. I think we have seen a lot of growth in these young men in the past few weeks. Fundamentals, technique, and our understanding of the defense have been improving each day. There has been great collaboration and competition across the group. These young men have been motivating each other to be the best versions of themselves that they can be. I am looking forward to seeing how the group will prepare for the start of the season.

 2. With a spring and summer under their belt learning Coach Backus' defensive system, how has the D-Line improved over the past few months?
Coach Yaya: They have made a lot of progress. Having the spring and summer to learn Coach Backus' system has really helped the guys play with confidence and fast. They are getting better understanding their assignments, techniques and how their individual position fits into this defense. They are communicating better and working together for a common goal.

3. We are fortunate to have experienced multi-year starters in Jacob Moore and Elijah Brooks. How are they helping the rats come along and adjust to Division I college football?
Coach Yaya: The experience Jacob and Elijah bring is huge to these younger guys. They have been doing a great job in helping them prepare for the lifestyle they will now be living. They are also willing to coach the younger guys up and help them understand the little things that can make a big difference. They are helping them adjust to the speed and physicality of Division I college football, which is great to see. That veteran leadership is valuable for our entire defensive line.
