Keydets fall to the Bulldogs in Game 2

LEXINGTON, Va. – Despite going into the final inning with a 4-3 lead, the VMI baseball team fell by a 7-4 score in 10 innings to rival The Citadel Friday night in Game 2 of the conference series at Lamore Field at Gray-Minor Stadium.
 
With the loss, VMI falls to 28-25 overall, 3-17 SoCon while the Bulldogs improve to 29-24, 10-10 in league play.
 
The highlight of the game for VMI came in the seventh inning when senior Grayson Fitzwater was intentionally walked to become VMI's all-time leader in both career base on balls with 144 as well as the all-time single season walks leader with 49 in 2026.
 
Key Stats
*VMI's Ayden Schnarrs earned two RBI on one hit for the night when he doubled to left field in the sixth inning to lift VMI to a 4-3 lead
*Despite being walked twice, Fitzwater logged two hits and scored one run
*VMI catcher Cole Raile earned a hit register one RBI on the night while also scoring a run himself
*The Citadel pitcher Michael Gibson earned the win in 3.1 innings pitched as he allowed just one hit and allowed one walk while fanning six VMI batters
*VMI pitcher Hunter Sipe picked up the loss after throwing the final 5.0 innings allowing six hits and four earned runs. Senior Clark Driscoll pitched the first 5.0 innings and allowed three earned runs on five hits
 
Scoring Summary
*In the top of the sixth inning, the Bulldogs grabbed a 3-1 lead when Zach Hunt singled to left center to score TJ Anderson
*VMI came back in the bottom of the frame when a Cole Raile single to the right side advanced Fitzwater to third and scored Owen Prince to cut the deficit to 3-2
*Later in the inning, Ayden Schnarrs pulled VMI ahead by a 4-3 count when he doubled to left to score both Fitzwater and Raile
*With his team down by a run in the top of the ninth, The Citadel's Sam Dansky homered to left center to knot the game at 4-4. The Keydets were unable t*o answer in the bottom of the ninth to go into extras
*In the 10th frame, The Citadel's Michael Gibson flied out to center to advance Jayden Williams to third and score Lane Tobin for a 5-4 lead
*Bulldog Zach Hunt then doubled down the left field line to score two runs as TJ Anderson and Jayden Williams reached home plate
*With Owen Prince at first base following a Citadel error, two Keydets were struck out in the bottom of the 10th before Schnarrs grounded out to second to end the game
