Scott to step down from VMI Director of Cross Country and Track & Field role

LEXINGTON, Va. – After a conversation with Head Coach Zack Scott Thursday morning, he has decided to step down as the Director of Cross Country and Track & Field effective immediately.

A graduate of VMI (1989), Scott joined the staff in 2004, working primarily with the throwers for many years before being elevated to associate head coach and ultimately named Director of Track & Field after the retirement of Darrin Webb in the fall of 2021.

While Scott continued to focus on throwers, he oversaw all aspects of the program including meet management, recruiting, and strength and conditioning. In 2024, Scott was named the Southern Conference Men's Outdoor Coach of the Year.

VMI Athletics thanks Coach Scott for his service and commitment to the Institute.

"I am grateful to Zack Scott for the passion and commitment he brought to the program as a coach since 2004," said Director of Athletics Jamaal Walton. "I wish Zack all the best in his future endeavors. We will work diligently to find our next leader and remain committed to delivering a first-class cadet-athlete experience while building a championship-caliber program."

A national search for the next Director of Track & Field is underway.
