Men’s Cross Country takes seventh at Tryon meet

MILL SPRING, N.C. – The VMI men's cross country team earned an excellent finish Friday night at the Tryon Western NC XC Showcase as the team continues to build momentum for the SoCon race in a few weeks.

The Keydets placed seventh overall out of 14 schools competing at the event with 183 points. Furman and Western Carolina tied for the lead with 38 points apiece while West Georgia came in third with 105 points. Tennessee Tech, Montreat and Mars Hill finished just ahead of the Keydets in the team standings.

Sophomore Cameron Lambert led the Keydets in 21st place with an 8K time of 26:49.8 just ahead of senior Patrick Lowry's time of 26:53.0 for 29th place.

Fellow sophomore Timothy Renquist came in 42nd overall in 27:18 while freshman Zachary Schubert came in 50th overall in 27:34. Freshman William Byrnes also scored points for the Keydets by arriving in 57th overall in 27:53.6.

Colin Crenshaw, Camden Gonzales, Peter Fiorillo and Elijah Savoie also competed for the Keydets Friday night.

"Today was a great indicator for where we are as team. Being able to run on the course that they will race on at Conference was a priority for us. On the women's side, Reagan and Jillian continued to lead the group with top tier performances. On the guys' side, Cameron and Patrick competed well to lead the men against a strong field."
