VMI rallies for 9-8 win over Monmouth

Keydets win in come-from-behind fashion a third consecutive week

LEXINGTON, Va. – Down 8-6 with 10 minutes left in regulation, the VMI lacrosse team rallied for three late goals to earn a 9-8 come-from-behind win over visiting Monmouth University Saturday afternoon at Drill Field 2.

The victory marks the third week in a row the Keydets have rallied from behind to snatch victory from defeat. It is also the second year in a row the Keydets (3-3) have rallied to defeat the Hawks (3-3) in come-from-behind fashion.

Game Summary
A Ty Caffarelli goal by Monmouth put the Hawks up 8-6 at the 10:25 mark of the final period, their largest lead of the game. Unfazed, VMI's Ty Yonas cut the deficit to 8-7 with a goal at the 6:09 mark. Senior Will Gormsen then tied the score at 8-all with a goal with 2:38 on the clock. Unwilling to go into overtime, VMI's Jack Duncan-Bloom earned a hat trick and put in the game-winning goal with only 1:25 to play to seal the win for the Keydets.

The Hawks got a couple shots off in the final minute but could not score the equalizer as the Keydets improved to 3-3 heading into league play next week.

The Keydets got off to a good start to the game with a 2-0 lead off goals by Duncan-Bloom and Ethan Ostrowski, their largest advantage of the game. Monmouth countered with three unanswered goals to take the lead, and the Keydets and Hawks traded barbs the rest of the way in a back-and-forth contest.
