Keydets fall to Dolphins to open NEC play

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – In a back-and-forth contest featuring eight ties and nine lead changes, the VMI lacrosse team came up just short of a comeback in the final minutes as host Le Moyne earned a 13-12 victory over the Keydets Saturday afternoon at a snowy Ted Grant Field in Syracuse, New York.

Game Summary
The game was a shootout from the get-go as VMI (3-4) jumped to a 3-1 lead in the opening period following goals by Jack Duncan-Bloom and two by Dayton Bagwell.  The Dolphins (2-7) knotted the score at 3-3 early in the second period before Bagwell earned a hat trick at the 11:19 mark of the stanza to put the Keydets back on top.

VMI and Le Moyne traded barb for barb as neither team could grab complete control of the game but opted for generosity in keeping the score close the entire contest.

Bagwell scored his fourth goal of the game early in the third period to put his career total at 70 goals as he became only the 18th Keydet in program history to attain 70 career goals at the Institute.

With the game tied at 10-10 following a Warner Lewis goal with 12:44 left in the game, the Dolphins pulled ahead by two scores with only 9:50 on the clock.

Lewis earned a hat trick with his third goal of the day with 7:48 remaining, but Le Moyne's Connor Lukas scored the game-winning goal at the 6:51 mark off a Zack Crosby assist to put the game away.

VMI's Will Gormsen would go on to add one more for VMI with 4:47 on the clock to earn his first career hat trick, but the Dolphins locked down on defense in the final moments to secure the conference victory over the Keydets.
