Keydets take Radford series with 9-1 victory Sunday

RADFORD, Va. – The VMI baseball team remains undefeated in their respective season series thus far as the Keydets claimed a 9-1 win over the Highlanders Sunday afternoon to clinch the three-game series.
 
Ahead 2-0 after one inning, VMI used an explosive second inning to blow up the lead to an 8-0 advantage by plating six runs in the top of the frame.
 
The VMI pitching staff combined for six strikeouts – including four by winning pitcher Roberto Velasquez in 4.0 IP – and allowed just five hits for the afternoon.
 

 
Key Stats
*In four at-bats, senior Owen Prince earned two hits and scored three runs to go with one stolen base. He was also hit by a pitch.
*Ayden Schnarrs logged one RBI double and rounded the plates twice while Bradley Garner had two hits -including one sac fly – and three stolen bases
*Catcher Cole Raile had an RBI double that brought in two runs and scored one run himself
 
Game Summary
1st inning
Ayden Schnarrs advanced to second on a throwing error in a failed pickoff attempt to bring in Owen Prince for a quick 1-0 lead. Seth Buchanan then sac flied out to left for an RBI to score Schnarrs for a 2-0 early advantage over the host.
 
2nd inning
Bradley Garner flied out to center to score Prince. Cole Raile then doubled to right center and advanced to third on a fielding error by the center fielder to bring home Grayson Fitzwater and Schnarrs for a 5-0 lead.
 
Seth Buchanan then advanced to third and Cole Raile scored on a passed ball for a 6-0 VMI advantage. Buchanan came home on a wild pitch for a 7-0 lead, and Cole Cook scored on another wild pitch as VMI took advantage of Radford throwing errors for an 8-0 lead after two innings.
 
5th inning
Ayden Schnarrs earned an RBI double to right center to score Prince and bump the lead up to 9-0 in the top of the fifth.
 
The Highlanders got on the board in the bottom of the fifth when a Carrington Aaron double down the left field line scored Mason Self to keep Radford from going scoreless.

The Keydets head to Washington, D.C., for a Tuesday midweek tilt with George Washington at 3 p.m. before SoCon play begins this weekend at ETSU.
