VMI tops Mercyhurst for first league win of season

ERIE, Pa. – The VMI lacrosse team opened with a huge first period with seven goals and never looked back as the Keydets earned a hard-fought 19-13 Northeast Conference victory over host Mercyhurst Saturday afternoon at Saxon Stadium in Erie, Pennsylvania.

The Keydets (4-4, 1-1) started with two quick goals in the first two minutes as Beau Durkin and Jack Duncan-Bloom set the tone early for what VMI would accomplish during the day.  The Keydets registered seven goals during the opening quarter – including a hat trick by Duncan-Bloom – over the first 15 minutes while surrendering four goals to the Lakers.

VMI logged three more goals in the second period but also gave up three goals to Mercyhurst to go into the break with a 10-7 advantage.

After an early goal by Mercyhurst to start the second half, the Keydets tallied four unanswered goals to build a commanding 14-8 lead with 3:51 left in the third period.  The Lakers scored two late goals in the final three minutes to go into the fourth period down by a 14-10 count.

VMI put the Lakers away in the final period by again going on a 4-0 run midway through the quarter to build an insurmountable 19-11 lead with 2:42 left in regulation.
