Keydets drop series opener at Radford

RADFORD, Va. – The VMI baseball team opened its Spring Break series with Radford with a 9-4 loss Friday night at Sherman Carter Memorial Stadium in Radford, Virginia.
 
The Keydets (17-4) earned a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning off a Grayson Fitzwater bomb to center field but a rough fourth inning proved costly for the Keydets as the Highlanders built an insurmountable 6-1 lead en route to victory.
 
Key Stats
- In three at-bats, Fitzwater earned two runs on two hits (triple, home run) to go with two RBI
- Senior Owen Prince had two runs on two hits including a double in the eighth inning in which he was brought home by Fitzwater
-Radford's Brady Powell went 3-for-5 from the plate as he brought in three RBI and hit a double
-Devin Parks also had a big day for the Highlanders as he logged two hits in four at-bats for two RBI and registered two runs himself. Noah Toole had two hits in three at-bats to bring in two RBI and tally two runs
 
Scoring Summary
With the Keydets ahead 1-0 after 3.5 innings, Radford's Devin Parks homered to center field in the bottom of the fourth inning to put the Highlanders up, 2-1. A walk then brought in Alex Levesque to make it 3-1 for Radford. Powell then hit a two-RBI single through the left side to bring home Aaron Carrington and Brady Whitacre for a 5-1 Highlander advantage. The dominant Radford inning finished after Eli Hudgins doubled to left to bring in Noah Toole for the final run of the inning.
 
VMI's Bradley Garner got things going for VMI in the fifth inning when he singled to left to advance Fitzwater to second and bring home Owen Prince to cut the deficit to 6-2 in favor of the Highlanders.
 
Radford would add two runs in the sixth inning off a triple from Toole to bring in Junho Son before Powell doubled to bring in Toole to go into the seventh inning ahead by an 8-2 score.
 
VMI continued to fight and added two runs in the top of the eighth inning. Fitzwater tripled to center to bring home Prince to cut the deficit to 8-3. A Cole Raile single to right then brought home Fitzwater for the Keydets' final tally. VMI was unable to bring in any more RBI to head into the final inning down 8-4.
 
Radford would go on to add one more run in the bottom of the eighth inning for the game's final tally.
 
Up Next
The Keydets come back home to host the Highlanders Saturday at 2 p.m., before going back to Radford for the series finale on Sunday at 1 p.m. Saturday's contest will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
