VMI rallies to defeat Queens, 11-10

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Down by four goals in the first period, the VMI lacrosse team came from behind to defeat host Queens by an 11-10 score Saturday afternoon at Dickson Field.
 
Game Summary
The Keydets (2-3) got into a 0-4 hole to open the game as the Royals (2-3) struck early and often for the early advantage.  Dayton Bagwell stopped the bleeding with VMI's first goal at the 5:23 mark to go into the second period with VMI down, 4-1.
 
VMI's Franklin Schulhofer scored his first career goal at the 9:42 mark of the second period moments before Bagwell struck again as the Keydets went into halftime down by a 5-3 tally.
 
Down 6-3 early in the third period, VMI's Warner Lewis, Austin English and Beau Durkin scored  three unanswered goals to knot the score at 6-6 at the 9:03 mark of the period.  After two Queens goals, English put in another goal with 12 seconds left in the third to cut the deficit to 8-7 with one quarter to go.
 
Durkin logged a hat trick following two consecutive goals to open the final period for VMI's first lead of the game with 9:57 left in the contest.  Ethan Scaffidi and Carter Petersen put the Royals back on top with 7:33 to play following consecutive goals, but VMI's Ty Yonas again knotted the score at 10 apiece with 3:51 left.
 
VMI freshman Ethan Ostrowski earned the game-winning goal just moments later at the 3:17 mark to put the Keydets on top for a second time and VMI held on in the final minutes to secure the come-from-behind victory for the Keydets' second win of the young season.
 
Key Stats
*VMI faceoff specialist Jack Rogers was dominant for at the Faceoff X by winning 21 of 25 faceoffs for the day
*VMI went 0-6 on extra-man opportunities while the Royals went 0-2
*The Keydets won the shots count by a 41-34 margin as well as the groundball count, 34-25
*Carter Petersen and Will McKay led the Royals with three goals apiece
