Keydets split Saturday slate with Skyhawks

LEXINGTON, Va. – VMI Baseball went 1-1 during Saturday's doubleheader against Stonehill at Lamore Field at Gray-Minor Stadium.
 
The Keydets (9-2) shut out the Skyhawks (1-9) in game one, 3-0, but let game two slip away in a 16-5 mercy-rule loss. VMI's home winning streak caps off at nine games, as Stonehill records its first win of 2026.


 
Game 1 Key Stats
- VMI earned three runs off seven hits.
- Bradley Garner hit a two-run homer.
- Trace Monroe, Clark Driscoll, and Hunter Sipe combined for a nine-inning shutout.
- Monroe and Driscoll each had four strikeouts, with Driscoll earning the win and Sipe getting the save.
- Owen Prince went two-for-four with a run and a stolen base.

- Garner's opposite-field rocket put the Keydets up 2-0 in the first inning.
- With both sides in a pitcher's duel, VMI took advantage of an error and a wild pitch that Prince scored on.

- The Keydets swiped 10 bases, with Bradley Garner earning a season-high four steals.

- Andrew Jones led the staff with four strikeouts.
 
Game 2 Scoring Summary
- Stonehill came out blazing in the opening frame with a pair of runs.
- Garner continued his stellar day with an RBI infield single, followed by a Jordan RBI single that knotted it up at two apiece.
- In the third inning, Jordan stole home to help the Keydets go up 3-2.
- Stonehill flipped the script in the following inning with a home run, making it 4-3.
- However, VMI plated two more in the fourth following a pair of bases-loaded walks.
- The Skyhawks found some momentum after scoring two in the fifth inning, followed by five in the sixth inning, and the nail-in-the-coffin five-run eighth inning to put the mercy rule in play.
