VMI tops Hampton in 17-15 thriller

HAMPTON, Va. – Trailing 9-7 at halftime, the VMI lacrosse team rallied to defeat host Hampton University in thrilling fashion as the Keydets took down the Pirates by a 17-15 score Saturday night at Armstrong Stadium in Hampton, Virginia.
 
The victory improves VMI to 1-3 for the season and marks first year Head Coach Taylor Mendoza's first victory at the helm of the VMI Lacrosse program.  VMI also improves to 10-0 all-time against the Pirates.
 
With the game tied 15-15 with only four minutes left, VMI junior attackman Dayton Bagwell scored VMI's final two goals to lift the Keydets to victory. He finished the game with seven goals, his second consecutive game with seven goals scored and third of his career. He totaled 14 goals for the week between the games versus Navy and Hampton. Seven goals again ties for third most in a single game in program history.
 
Senior attackman Austin English also had an excellent outing with six points on three goals and three assists as he now has 100 points for his VMI career, only the 22nd Keydet in program history to reach the century mark for points. With his point tallies tonight, he now has 75 career goals at the Institute to go with 25 assists.
 
Game Summary
Bagwell scored the first goal of the game just 1:30 into the match before Hampton equalized one minute later. After VMI's Cole Jones scored at the 7:40 mark to VMI back up, the Pirates (0-4) closed the period with four unanswered goals to pull ahead 5-2 after one quarter.
 
Hampton scored three goals early in the second period and led by an 8-3 margin at the 9:49 mark before halftime. VMI countered with four unanswered goals of its own to come within one goal at 8-7 with 3:48 to go before the Pirates put in one more score for a 9-7 halftime advantage over the Keydets.
 
VMI took control in the third period by only allowing two Hampton goals while scoring six, including tallies by Beau Durkin, three straight by Bagwell, one from English and one by Will Gormsen with under a minute before the fourth period.
 
Both teams scored four goals apiece in the final period, including the game-winning goal by Bagwell with 1:42 left in regulation before he tacked on one more with 23 seconds left as a security goal.

*The Keydets won the shots count by a slim 51-44 margin in the high-scoring affair
*Jack Rogers played a pivotal role by winning 24 of 36 faceoff attempts
*VMI cleared 13 of 16 attempts while the Pirates went 16-21
