Keydets never back down in loss to Navy

Bagwell goes off for seven goals, Keydets net double figures for first time against Midshipmen

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The VMI lacrosse team showed fight and max effort in a battle with the Naval Academy before eventually falling by a 19-12 score Tuesday night at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Maryland.

VMI (0-3) notched double digits against the Midshipmen (2-1) for the first time as the Keydets scored fewer than 10 goals in each of the eight previous matchups.

Junior attackman Dayton Bagwell scored seven of VMI's 12 goals on the night, which tied for third-most in a single game in program history and matched the seven he scored against St. Bonaventure in the 2025 season opener. With an assist, he totaled eight points during the contest, which ties for fifth-most for a single game in the VMI records.

Game Summary
The Keydets raced to a 3-0 lead in the game's opening four minutes to jump out of the gates against a surprised Midshipmen defense.

The Navy offense countered quickly, however, to score six goals over the next eight minutes to pull ahead, 6-3, with three minutes left in the first period.  VMI's Tyler Hicks found the back of the net with 1:12 left in the first to go into the second stanza with a small 6-4 deficit.

Both teams scored three goals apiece in the second period to go into halftime with the Mids up, 9-7.  VMI senior goalie Adam Norris scored his first career goal as a Keydet as he looked downfield and saw an open Navy net and connected on a long-distance sling.

Navy took control of the game in the third period by outscoring the Keydets by an 8-3 margin despite Bagwell scoring his fifth and sixth goals of the contest.

VMI Head Lacrosse Coach Taylor Mendoza
"I'm Incredibly proud of the heart and fight shown tonight against a very well-coached and athletic Navy team. While we had a strong effort as a team, Bagwell's seven goals while being covered by one of the nation's best defenders stands out."
