Mejia named SoCon Men’s Soccer Player of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – After leading VMI to its first SoCon victory of the season, VMI senior forward Yeirin Mejia has been named the Southern Conference Player of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.

The senior from Cortes, Honduras, led the Keydets to a thrilling 4-2 win over visiting Mercer  University this past Saturday at Patchin Field by scoring a game-high two goals during the contest.

After Mercer scored in the game's opening minute, Mejia tallied an equalizer in the 12th minute off an assist from Conner Reid. With VMI ahead 3-2 at the half, Mejia logged the only goal of the second half when he converted a penalty kick in the 50th minute for the game's final score.

"This achievement is a true testament to the relentless hard work and dedication Yeirin brings to the pitch every single day," said VMI Head Coach Nick Regan. "There are no half measures with him; he embodies exactly what it means to be a VMI cadet-athlete. From finding the back of the net in the preseason against Virginia and George Washington, he has carried that exceptional form into the regular season, scoring eight crucial goals, including three in Southern Conference play. With one conference match remaining before the playoffs, we are incredibly excited to see Yeirin and this entire group continue to elevate their game."

Mejia achieved a great shot percentage during the match as he scored two goals on his two shot attempts of the game.

The Chantilly, Virginia, native is enjoying a breakout season as he now owns a team-high eight goals for the year, doubling his goals output from his previous three years combined.
