VMI falls to ETSU on the road

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The VMI basketball team made its first Southern Conference road trip of the season to Johnson City, Tennessee, but came up short as the host Bucs earned an 81-67 league victory over the Keydets Wednesday night at Freedom Hall.

With the loss, VMI falls to 6-10 overall and 1-2 in conference play while league leader ETSU improves to 11-5 overall and 3-0 in conference.

Game Summary
Down 41-30 at the half, the Keydets tried to keep pace with ETSU in the second half and pulled with seven points with 10:49 remaining following an AJ Clark steal and breakaway layup, but the Bucs continued to hit big shots down the stretch to pull away for the win.

VMI junior TJ Johnson spurred the comeback effort by scoring 21 points in the second half en route to a game-high 30 points, his third highest scoring output of the season and just two points shy of his career best 32 attained earlier this season at Southern Indiana. He hit the mark by matching his career-best six three-pointers made during the contest. Johnson also came up just one rebound shy of registering his third double-double of the season and fourth of his career.

Cam Morris III played a lead role in guiding the Bucs to victory by scoring 25 points on the night followed by teammate Blake Barkley contributing 20. Jaylen Smith also scored in double figures with 13 points throughout the game.
