Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

VMI taken down by UNCG

LEXINGTON, Va. – Rallying from a 20-point deficit midway through the second half, the VMI basketball team fought back to come within five in the final minute but could not quite complete the comeback as visiting UNCG earned an 85-78 win over the Keydets Wednesday night at Cameron Hall.

TJ Johnson earned his fifth career double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds as he hit five threes on the night, but his efforts were countered by a monstrous game from UNCG's Justin Neely. One of the league's top rebounders, Neely picked up 22 boards against the Keydets to go with a game-high 22 points to lead the Spartans to victory.

With the loss, VMI falls to 6-14, 1-6 while the Spartans improve to 8-12, 4-3 in conference play.

Game Summary
The first half featured 10 lead changes and three ties as the schools traded barbs and took turns taking the reins. Cal Liston and Johnson both hit three treys in the opening 20 minutes while Linus Holmstrom added eight points to keep the Keydets in contention at the break down by just five, 38-33.

The Spartans started to take control of the game under the 15:00 mark when Donald Whitehead, Jr. hit a pair of free throws and two buckets to give UNCG a 13-point lead at 59-46 to force a VMI timeout to pause the momentum. The Spartans continued to pour it on, however, and led by as many as 20 points at 70-50 with 10:05 to play following a KJ Young breakaway layup resulting from a VMI turnover.
