VMI falls to The Citadel Saturday night

LEXINGTON, Va. – Playing on a rare Saturday night, the VMI basketball team fell to rival The Citadel by an 82-68 score in Southern Conference action at Cameron Hall.

VMI generally plays on Saturday afternoons at home but altered the game due to the Corps of Cadets marching for the governor's inauguration in Richmond.

Game Summary
The Keydets hit the first basket of the game on a three-pointer by Linus Holmstrom for a quick lead but the Bulldogs matched the score with a Braxton Williams three for the only tie of the game. Another Williams trey put the Bulldogs up and The Citadel never looked behind as VMI had to play catch-up the rest of the game.

Midway through the first half, the Bulldogs built an 11-point lead at 21-10 following a Carter Kingsbury three and increased the lead to 18 after a Christian Moore three to put the score at 39-21 with under three minutes to play before the half.

Williams had 13 points at the break for The Citadel en route to a 47-34 lead over the Keydets as the Bulldogs converted seven of 12 three-point attempts while VMI countered with three treys. AJ Clark led VMI with eight points after 20 minutes to keep the Keydets in contention.

VMI made a comeback effort in the second half and pulled with seven, 54-47, with 12:56 to play following a Mario Tatum, Jr. layup off a Citadel turnover that got the crowd pumped.

A Marcos Gonzalez three-pointer put the Bulldogs back up by 14 with 8:12 left in the game to make the score 66-52, a deficit VMI could not ultimately recover from.  The Keydets pulled back within nine after a TJ Johnson three with 2:25 left, but The Citadel hit its free throws down the stretch to escape Cameron Hall with the rivalry victory.
