Keydets top Saint Francis for first win of the season

LEXINGTON, Va. – Looking to head into SoCon play with momentum, the VMI women's soccer team picked up its first win of the season Sunday afternoon by defeating visiting Saint Francis at Patchin Field by a 3-1 score.

With the win, VMI Head Coach Jim Robbins earned his first victory at the helm of the program as the Keydets improved to 1-7-1 on the year. With the loss, the Red Flash fall to 0-5-2.

VMI Head Coach Jim Robbins
"I thought we played well from the first whistle to the last. I've been telling the team that we need to be the better team for 90 minutes, and I thought we were today. It was unfortunate to not convert on two penalty kick opportunities in the first half to put the game out of reach, but we showed great fight in the second half and closed the game out late. It was really good for our girls to get the win."

How it Happened
*VMI freshman Mack Hobik lined up for a free kick at the top of the goal box in the 21st minute (20:44) and knocked it into the upper left corner of the net to put VMI up, 1-0, midway through the period
*Two minutes later, freshman Natalie Centurione scored her first career goal at VMI after taking a cross from Bailey Reid and scoring at the 22:33 for what proved to be the game-winning goal and 2-0 VMI advantage going into the break
*Saint Francis' Kaitlyn Dempster put the Red Flash on the board early in the second half (54:50) after she recovered a ball deep in VMI territory following a corner kick and slipped it past VMI keeper Maren Ryberg to avoid Saint Francis from being shut out
*Late in the match, VMI freshman Isabella Franco scored her first career goal at VMI after taking a cross from Madeline Karsonovich and knocking it home for a VMI insurance goal and 3-1 final tally
