VMI heads north to face NEC foe

LEXINGTON, Va. – VMI Men's Soccer embarks to New Britain, Connecticut, for a weekend matchup against Central Connecticut State at CCSU Soccer Field on Saturday at 4 p.m.
 
The Keydets (1-4-1) look to snap their three-game skid, but standing in the way are the Blue Devils, who are searching for their first win of 2025.


 
Keys to the Keydets
Keydets Fall Twice at Home. VMI had two losses in its latest homestand, the first coming in a 3-0 defeat to Liberty, followed by a 2-1 battle against Saint Peter's.
 
Goal Scorer. Picking up his first goal of the season was Andres Fuentes-Ramos, who scored off a free kick against SPU.
 
Racking Minutes. Zack Murphy ranks 26th nationally with 495 goalie minutes played. He now sits fifth in program history with over 3,500 minutes played.
 
Stat Leaders. Rowen Choi and Jack Yough lead the team with two goals apiece, while Choi leads the program with five points. Sam Dowdy has dished out a team-leading two assists, which ranks 32nd in D-I.
 
Life Saver. Zack Murphy ranks in the top 25 among DI goalies with 21 saves.
 
National Ranks. VMI ranks in the top 50 with 28 total points and 10 total goals.
 
SoCon Ranks. VMI ranks first with 33 corner kicks and 22 saves.
 
Year 4. Head Coach Nick Regan returns for his fourth season at the helm. Regan has collected 13 victories, ranking third all-time.
 
Scouting the Blue Devils
- Central Connecticut State enters the match 0-3 after falling to UAlbany, Connecticut, and Merrimack.
- Despite holding opponents to a goal per game, the Blue Devils' offense has not scored a goal.
- The Blue Devils rank second nationally with seven saves per game.
- On the opposite end, CCSU ranks in the bottom five nationally in shots on goal per game.
- Goalkeeper Christian Torres ranks in the top 50 with a near 86% save percentage, while averaging four saves per contest.
- Santiago Marin stands 17th in DI with nearly four shots per game, and currently leads the team with 11 total shots, nine more than the second most.
- David Kelly was named the third head coach in program history in 2020 after spending the previous seven seasons as an assistant coach.
 
Series History
- VMI is 0-1-1 against CCSU.
- The last meeting was the season opener in 2003, when the Blue Devils defeated the Keydets, 2-1, in the Central Conn. Tournament.
- The first meeting was during the VMI Tournament in 2002, ending in a 3-3 tie.
