VMI Baseball ends home slate against ETSU

LEXINGTON, Va. – VMI Baseball dropped both games of the home finale doubleheader against East Tennessee State on Sunday afternoon at Lamore Field at Gray-Minor Stadium.
 
The Keydets (26-23, 5-13 SoCon) suffered a 6-3 loss in game one before faltering in game two, 12-6. Game one was resumed after weather forced a postponement during the fourth inning on Saturday.


 
Game 1 Key Stats
- VMI scored three runs off nine hits with three RBIs.
- Bradley Garner had a stellar outing, going four for five with two runs and a stolen base, including a double and a home run.
- Ryan Peterson had three hits with two RBIs and a double.
- Jaxon Lloyd pitched all four innings on Saturday, tossing four strikeouts, while Marcus Van Alstine started the Sunday portion, going five innings with six punchouts.
- With a walk, Grayson Fitzwater extended his on-base streak to a record-breaking 43 games.
 
Game 1 Scoring Summary
- Garner got the scoring started in the opening inning with a solo shot to left centerfield.
- After an hour weather delay, ETSU took the first pitch yard, gaining a 3-1 advantage before play was suspended.
- The Bucs resumed their heavy hitting on Sunday with a sacrifice fly in the sixth and a two-run home run in the eighth to go up 6-1.
- Peterson doubled in a pair of runs to cut the deficit in half.


 
Game 2 Key Stats
- VMI earned six runs off 10 hits with six RBIs.
- The Keydets had five extra-base hits.
- Bradley Garner and Owen Prince each tallied three hits and one run.
- Garner hit two doubles.
- Ryan Peterson slapped a pair of hits, including a triple, and was hit by two pitches to reach base safely in four plate appearances.
- Cole Raile launched his 12th home run of the year, ending the game with three RBIs.
- Ayden Schnarrs reached base safely three times off two walks and a hit by pitch.
- Caden Plummer went a season-high 7.1 innings, striking out two.
- Boston Torres scored his 65th run and drove in his 64th RBI of the season, both serving as new VMI single-season records.
 
Game 2 Scoring Summary
- The Keydets were rolling in the first three innings, going up 4-0.
- ETSU slowly inched back into the conversation, scoring two in the fifth and two more in the seventh, to tie it at four.
- VMI went up by two after Raile's clutch home run in the seventh inning.
- However, the Bucs surged with eight unanswered runs.
 
Next up for the Keydets
The Keydets will take a week off before their next series against Wofford in Spartanburg, South Carolina. The VMI-Wofford series begins Wednesday, May 14, and will roll through Friday, May 16. All three games will be broadcast on ESPN+.
