Water Polo falls in two MAAC contests Saturday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 PHILADELPHIA – The VMI women's water polo team battled hard Saturday in two Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference matches but came up on the short end against Marist College and Iona College hosted by Villanova in Philadelphia.
 
Marist College 21, VMI 10
The Red Foxes jumped out to a 6-3 lead after the opening period and extended the lead to 11-4 at halftime by holding VMI to one goal in the second period.
 
Haley Minnich, Makynna Smith and Sadie Smith scored for VMI in the first period while Sydney Smith put in the Keydets' lone goal in the second. 
 
Marist would go on to score 10 more goals in the second half – five in each third and fourth periods – while holding VMI to six goals for the final 21-10 tally.
 
Ella Baumgarten paced the Red Foxes with four goals during the match while Makalee Hansberger and Kendall De Beer each scored three.
 
Minnich finished with three goals for VMI and Sarah Fitzsimmons ended up with two goals in the final period.
 
Iona College 20, VMI 11
In the second match of the day for the Keydets taking on Iona College, the Gaels jumped out to an early 7-3 lead after the first period and put in five more goals in the second period while holding VMI to two for a 12-5 halftime advantage.
 
Iona put the game out of reach in the third period by adding six goals to VMI's two to go into the final period with an 18-7 lead.
 
The Keydets continued to battle and fight to the end by outscoring the Gaels by a 4-2 margin in the final stanza with goals by Sydney Smith, Courtney Novotny, and two by Sadie Smith.
 
Sydney Smith led VMI with three goals during the match while Sarah Fitzsimmons, Novotny, and Sadie Smith all contributed two.
 
Addison Collins led the Gaels with five goals during the match while Mikayla Arthur put in three and four others contributed a pair of scores.
 
Up Next
The Keydets conclude the 2025 regular season next weekend in Brooklyn, New York, where they will face LIU Saturday at 10 a.m. before taking on Villanova and La Salle Sunday, Apr. 13 at 10 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., respectively.
 
The top four MAAC schools will compete at the MAAC Tournament from April 25-27 hosted by Marist in Poughkeepsie, New York.
