VMI falls in overtime to Detroit Mercy

LEXINGTON, Va. – Ahead 9-4 going into the final period, the VMI lacrosse team could not sustain the lead as visiting Detroit Mercy rallied for five unanswered goals in the fourth quarter to knot the score and eventual game winner in overtime to top VMI, 10-9, Saturday afternoon at Drill Field #2.
 
With the loss, the Keydets fall to 8-3, 2-2 in Northeast Conference play while the Titans improve to 2-6,1-3 in league action.
 
The Keydets fought their way to a 2-1 lead after one period and ballooned the lead to 7-2 at halftime by scoring five goals in the second quarter. Detroit evened the scored at 2-2 a minute into the second period before VMI scored five unanswered goals the remainder of the half to go into the break with a five-goal lead.
 
Austin English scored VMI's first two goals before Matt Nichols, Dayton Bagwell, Wil Duffy, Luke Rusterucci and Simon Moore registered the five goals in the second period.
 
Rusterucci continued his active goal streak and also tallied two assists on the day as he eclipsed the 100 career assists mark to become the first Keydet in program history to earn both 100 goals and 100 assists during his VMI tenure.

The Keydets return to action next Saturday for an NEC road contest at Robert Morris. Face-off is slated for a noon start in Moon Township, Pennsylvania.
