VMI rally falls short at Robert Morris

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – Down 12-6 going into the fourth quarter, the VMI lacrosse team got to within four at 13-9 with nine minutes left but could not decrease the deficit any more as host Robert Morris earned a 15-9 victory over the Keydets Saturday afternoon at Joe Walton Stadium in Moon Township, Pennsylvania.
 
With the loss, VMI falls to 8-4, 2-3 in Northeast Conference play while the Colonials stay atop the league standings with an 8-4 overall record and a perfect 5-0 mark in league action.
 

 
Game Summary
Junior Austin English put VMI on the board first with a goal at the 11:05 mark of the opening period, but anytime the Keydets scored throughout the game, the Colonials responded with a pair or trio of goals of their own to gradually pull away.
 
The Keydets trailed by just one, 4-3, after one period, but the Colonials opened the second perioed with four unanswered goals to go up 8-3. Matt Nichols and Luke Mryncza scored goals late in the second period as Robert Morris went into the break with a 9-5 advantage.
 
English, Rusterucci, Dayton Bagwell and Nichols each scored a goal in the second half, but the Colonials were able to keep the Keydets from mounting a comeback with consistent play and possession management.

*Robert Morris won 21 of 27 faceoff attempts to control possession for much of the game.
*Despite several penalties, the Colonials held the Keydets to 1-for-5 on extra-man opportunities
