Keydets surge through Crusaders Friday night

LEXINGTON, Va. – VMI Baseball kicked off the series against Holy Cross with a dominating victory at Lamore Field at Gray-Minor Stadium on Friday.

The Keydets move to 11-1 and have now won eight-straight home games after defeating the Crusaders, 21-9, in seven innings. VMI picked up its seventh run-rule victory and scored 10+ runs for the 11th time.
 
 
Key Stats
- VMI scored 21 runs off 12 hits with a season-high 20 RBIs.
- All nine Keydets reached base safely.
- VMI drew 18 walks, a new single-game high.
- Boston Torres exploded for three hits with a double and a grand slam, three runs, and eight RBIs.
- Torres' eight RBIs are the most in a game since 2020.
- Ryan Peterson and Kazuya Jordan each homered and scored three times.
- Cole Cook and Seth Buchanan walked four times apiece.
- VMI stole six bases.
- Marcus Van Alstine picks up his second win on the bump, going 3.2 innings, allowing no runs and striking out three.
- Owen Prince recorded a pair of hits to extend his hitting streak to eight games.
- Grayson Fitzwater doubled and drove in three runs.
 
Scoring Summary
- Holy Cross caught VMI off guard in the first couple of innings, going on an 8-0 through the bottom of the third inning.
- VMI chipped away at the deficit in the third frame thanks to a Jordan solo shot, a Fitzwater double, and a two-run bomb by Peterson to make it 8-5.
- The Crusaders added one more run in the fourth.
- The Keydets scored the final 17 runs of the game, starting with a seven-run fourth inning.
- Max Perry contributed in the fifth inning with an RBI single while Torres nabbed a two-RBI double in the sixth.
- Another VMI surge in the seventh cut the game short as the Keydets plated six more.
 
Next up for the Keydets
The Keydets host the Crusaders in a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. Game one will be a scheduled seven-inning game while game two will be a full nine innings. Both games will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
