VMI loses offensive slugfest against UNCG

LEXINGTON, Va. – VMI Baseball issued a late comeback but came up short in a loss to UNC Greensboro on Saturday at Lamore Field at Gray-Minor Stadium.

The Keydets (16-11, 2-3 SoCon) drop their second-straight Southern Conference bout to the Spartans in a game that featured a combined 25 runs scored with 29 hits and six home runs.
 
 
Key Stats
- VMI recorded 12 runs off 16 hits with 12 RBIs.
- Boston Torres was on fire at the plate, going a perfect five for five with three RBIs, four runs, a double, and a home run, just a triple shy of the cycle.
- Ayden Schnarrs stepped up in a big way, posting four hits with five RBIs and two doubles while reaching base in all five at-bats.
- Torres and Schnarrs combined to go nine for nine at the dish with eight RBIs, reaching base in all 10 at-bats.
- Grayson Fitzwater homered in his second-straight game, extending his on-base streak to 22 games.
- Ryan Peterson tallied a pair of hits and two runs.
- Bradley Garner scored three times and drew two walks.
- Tossing multiple strikeouts were Caden Plummer, Andrew Jones, and Justin Spiegel.

Scoring Summary
- VMI got out to an early lead after a three-run first inning thanks to a Torres single and a Schnarrs double.
- UNCG quickly answered in the second and third innings, flipping the script and making it a 6-3 game.
- Schnarrs placed a perfect bunt single back to the pitcher to score Torres.
- The Spartans doubled up on the Keydets again, this time extending their lead to 8-4.
- In the fifth inning, Torres smacked an opposite-field two-run shot to cut the deficit to three right before Kazuya Jordan secured an RBI to pull within one.
- Once again, UNCG added more runs, this time plating two in the sixth inning, 10-7.
- A big shift in momentum happened in the bottom of the sixth as Peterson singled in one run, followed by a monstrous double in the gap by Schnarrs to tie the game at 10 apiece.
- UNCG rebutted the very next frame, scoring three runs.
- VMI made a valiant effort in the eighth inning, starting off with Fitzwater's ninth homer of the season and ending with a bases-loaded walk by Jordan.

The Keydets cap off the series tomorrow against the Spartans with first pitch set for 1 p.m.
