LEXINGTON, Va. – VMI Baseball looks to keep its unbeaten streak alive when the Keydets drive to Charlottesville, Virginia, to face nationally recognized Virginia at Davenport Field at Disharoon Park Tuesday.

The Keydets have won their first seven games, their best start since 2010, including a pair of shutouts and four run-rule affairs. VMI seeks an upset over nationally-ranked Virginia who will open their home schedule against the Keydets.
Keys to the Keydets
This is so B-Rad. Bradley Garner was sensational in the series sweep, batting .778 with seven hits, four walks, three RBIs, and eight stolen bases.
Plum Dog. Caden Plummer was named SoCon Pitcher of the Week after a career-like start against the Eagles, going six innings allowing no earned runs, and striking out 13, the most in a game since 2019.
Prince of Pain. Not only did
Owen Prince match a single-game high with six stolen bases and five walks, but he now leads the country in both categories with 16 steals and 14 walks along with 15 runs.
K Zone. VMI staffers have thrown 70 strikeouts with 12 strikeouts per nine innings, top 15 in NCAA Division I. The Keydets also boast a sub-two ERA.
Fire Starters. VMI's series starters totaled 17 innings, no earned runs, and 30 punchouts.
Season Streaks. Boston Torres has recorded at least one hit in all seven games. He has also accumulated five multi-hit and multi-RBI games. Seven Keydets have reached base safely in all seven games.
The Last Time. This is VMI's best start to a season since 2010 when the Keydets went 10-0, the longest winning streak in program history.
Runs Galore. VMI has scored 98 runs, the second most, and 14 runs per game, the most in the nation. The Keydets have posted 10+ runs in all seven games.
Eagle Eye. Keydet batters have been walked 77 times, the most in the country.
The Brand. VMI has swiped 67 bags and serves as the nation's leader in stolen bases. The top four individual stolen bases and steals per game leaders are all Keydets (Prince, Garner, Jordan, and Perry).
Keydets in the Outfield. VMI's top hitters are the starting outfielders:
Boston Torres (.548),
Owen Prince (.474), and
Bradley Garner (.632). They also attest to 34 putouts with no errors.
Rub Some Dirt On It. Max Perry has shown his toughness as he has been hit by six pitches, the 10th most in the country.
The Best Boston. Boston Torres ranks in the top 25 in the country in batting average (.538), doubles (6), hits (14), runs (13), RBIs (18), and sacrifice flies (3).
Andy's Game. Andrew Jones is 2-0 on the bump with 16 strikeouts and no earned runs.
One Hit Wonder. Jaxon Lloyd tossed a one-hitter in six innings with nine strikeouts on Sunday. This is the first time since 2014 that VMI has allowed one hit or less.
Runnin' Raile. 15 of VMI's 98 runs have come from
Cole Raile, tied for most in the country with fellow Keydet Prince. Raile has also had a keen eye, walking 10 times which stands 14th in the NCAA.
Number 1. The Keydets ranked first among NCAA D-I programs in walks (77), on-base percentage (.551), sacrifice bunts (7), sacrifice flies (12), stolen bases (67), and stolen bases per game (9.57).
Top 25 in the Nation. VMI ranks in the top 25 among the NCAA in batting average (.356), ERA (1.90), hit by pitches (22), H/9 (6.23), runs (98), scoring (14.0), shutouts (2), slugging percentage (.552), K/BB (3.68), K/9 (12.1), triples (3), and WHIP (1.06).
Fastest to 50. Head Coach
Sam Roberts made history in 2024, becoming the fastest coach to reach 50 career wins. Roberts ranks fifth all-time in wins with 60.
Scouting the Cavaliers
- Virginia enters the week 3-3 overall after earning wins over Villanova, Rice, and Minnesota.
- The Cavaliers are ranked #10 by D1Baseball, previously ranked #2 before falling to #7 Oregon State and Oklahoma last weekend.
- UVA is coming off a 2024 College World Series run after sweeping the regional and super regional before bowing out in Omaha in game two.
- As a team, UVA holds a .229 batting average with 47 hits, nine doubles, and three homers to pair with 19 RBIs and 24 runs.
- The Cavaliers' pitching has been stellar, boasting a 2.67 ERA, 32nd best in the nation, with 70 strikeouts and a .231 opponent batting average.
- UVA has played cleanly in the field, allowing just three errors with a .987 fielding percentage, the 18th-best in the NCAA.
- Henry Godbout sits atop the Cavaliers' bats with a .348 average off eight hits.
- Preseason second-team All-American junior Evan Blanco is slated to get the start on Tuesday, his first of the season. Last year, Blanco went 8-3 with a 3.62 ERA.
- Head Coach Brian O'Connor, coaching his 22nd season, is a five-time ACC Coach of the Year, three-time National Coach of the Year, and was named ACC Coach of the Decade. O'Connor led his squad to a 2015 National Championship and it was announced that he will be a member of the 2024 American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame Class.
