VMI rally comes up short at Furman

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Down by just three at halftime by a 30-27 count, the VMI basketball team rallied and kept pace with host Furman but came up a little shy in the end as the Paladins earned a 75-71 victory over the Keydets Saturday afternoon at Bon Secours Wellness Arena.
 
With the loss, VMI falls to 13-16 overall and 7-9 in the Southern Conference while Furman improves to 21-8, 9-7 in conference play.
 
The Keydets got down by 11 midway through the opening half but climbed back to tie it at 26-all with 15 seconds before the half.  In the second half, the Paladins again pulled away and led by 13, 57-44, with 7:29 remaining, but the Keydets continued to fight and clawed back to a two-point deficit, 73-71, with three seconds on the clock following a TJ Johnson three.
 
Furman's PJay Smith hit the final two free throws of the game to seal the victory for the Paladins to secure the conference victory.
 

 
Key Stats
*Tan Yildizoglu finished with a career-high 20 points, topping his previous personal high of 17 points set twice this season
* TJ Johnson scored a team-high 21 points – just two shy of his career high – as he hit four threes, including two in the final minute of the game. He also had four steals on the defensive end
* Augustinas Kiudulas and Rickey Bradley, Jr. both finished in double figures with 11 points apiece
* Furman's Nick Anderson scored a game-high 22 points on the day hitting six shots and converting eight of nine free-throw attempts
* PJay Smith also scored in double figures for the Paladins with 17 points by scoring three treys and going 6-7 from the charity stripe

The Keydets return home for a pair of conference games at Cameron Hall to conclude the regular season. VMI faces Samford Thursday night at 6 p.m. before hosting Chattanooga for Senior Day Saturday at 1 p.m.
