Box Score 2 LEXINGTON, Va. – The VMI Water Polo Team faced two opponents at the VMI Aquatic Center on Saturday, topping Gannon before falling to McKendree.
The Keydets would pace the Golden Knights by a score of 15-8 before dropping a competitive contest to the Bearcats 15-12.
Despite the loss, for the first time in Head Coach Danielle Montenegro's career, VMI started the season 2-0. The 2-0 start was also the best start to a season for the Keydets since 2020.
Game 1 vs. Gannon – W, 15-8
- Gannon struck first but Sydney Smith would equalize as the teams would be knotted up at 3-3 after 1 quarter
- The Keydets distanced themselves slightly as Sadie Smith's second effort gave VMI a 5-3 lead before the teams would trade goals going into the break (VMI 6-4)
- VMI opened the scoring in the third and Sydney Smith picked up a hat trick as the Keydets took a 9-6 advantage to the final frame
- It was all Keydets in the 4th, as VMI would pace Gannon for the 15-8 win
Game 2 vs. McKendree – L, 12-15
- Sydney Smith kept rolling, scoring less than a minute into the contest
- McKendree would score four unanswered however, not trailing the rest of the way
- VMI cut the lead to one after Sadie, Sydney Smith and Sarah Fitzsimmons made it 6-5 with 3:46 in the 2nd, but McKendree kept pace and took an 11-8 advantage into the fourth
- After the Bearcats made the score 14-10, VMI attempted to mount a comeback but fell short
