Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Keydets earn 86-70 win over Loyola

LEXINGTON, Va. – Powered by 13 threes on the night – including seven by sophomore Linus Holmstrom – the VMI basketball team earned a hard-fought 86-70 win over visiting Loyola University (Md.) Tuesday night at Cameron Hall.

Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin was in the house as a special guest and granted amnesty to the Corps of Cadets to punctuate an all-around great night for the Virginia Military Institute.

Game Summary
Holmstrom paced VMI (5-7) to a dominant 51-32 lead at the half by way of his seven threes all in the opening half as he hit seven of nine attempts during the first 20 minutes including one just five seconds into the game. The Greyhounds (4-7) put a defensive emphasis on the Sweden native during the second half but he still finished the game with a game-high 23 points, two shy of his career high set last month against VU Lynchburg.

With the game tied at 7-7 early on, the Keydets went on a 15-0 run over the next several minutes to earn a 22-7 advantage with 12:38 before the half.

TJ Johnson hit four threes on the night for the Keydets en route to 17 points during the contest, while Tan Yildizoglu and Mario Tatum, Jr. also finished in double digits with 14 points apiece.

Loyola outscored VMI by a slim margin, 38-35, in the second half in a comeback bid but the Keydets held strong to come out with the victory. Sophomore Kaden Stuckey had his best game to this point of the season as he logged a season-high eight points and had two blocks on the defensive end.

VMI Head Coach Andrew Wilson
"I'm very proud of the kids. This was easily our most complete game from tip to finish. Everyone in the program contributed to the win. We've had our best practices of the year since returning from Florida and I think it showed tonight. We have played a very difficult non-conference schedule but we are getting better and hopefully playing our best basketball as we get closer to SoCon play."

Key Stats
*VMI led the entire game and got up by as many as 22 with eight minutes left in the game
