VMI falls at Radford to finish non-league slate

RADFORD, Va. – In a game featuring four lead changes and five ties in a back-and-forth contest, the VMI basketball team fell by a 97-90 score to host Radford Sunday afternoon at the Dedmon Center in Radford, Virginia.
 
The foul-plagued affair featured 49 personal fouls – 28 on VMI and 21 on Radford – as both teams entered foul trouble in both halves leading to 28 free throw attempts for VMI and 40 for Radford. VMI (5-8) went 25-for-28 (.893) from the charity stripe while the Highlanders (6-8) went 32-40 (.800) from the line.
 
VMI trailed by just one at the half, 43-44, and kept pace with the Highlanders the entirety of the second half, but Radford continually hit big shots in key moments down the stretch and went on mini scoring spurts to gradually pull away for the win.
 
VMI freshman Alexander Daushvili made his VMI debut in welcome fashion by hitting three of four field goal attempts and went a perfect 8-8 from the free-throw line for 14 points on the day.
 
First Half
The Keydets and Highlanders went back and forth in the opening half with both teams exchanging the lead en route to a 43-44 deficit for VMI. The Keydets led 10-7 at the first media timeout and earned a 21-17 lead following a Linus Holmstrom three-pointer and nifty And-1 layup.
 
TJ Johnson hit a pair of threes to help VMI to a 28-25 lead with under eight minutes to play before halftime. Radford increased its intensity and went up 37-33 over VMI as Jaylon Johnson got hot and hit four of five three-point attempts in the first half.
 
Daushvili logged an And-1 layup with about two minutes before the break. TJ Johnson hit a trey and Tan Yildizoglu got a layup to keep VMI in pace with the Highlanders as VMI went into halftime down by one, 43-44.

*VMI was led by junior TJ Johnson, who finished with 21 points as he hit five of eight treys
*Tan Yildizoglu finished with 15 points, while Linus Holmstrom (14), Daushvili (14), and Mario Tatum, Jr. (13) also ended up in double digits scoring. Yildizoglu also logged a game-high seven assists for VMI
*Dennis Parker, Jr. earned a game-high 26 points after hitting four threes while Jaylon Johnson also hit four treys en route to 23 points for the Highlanders
*Tyson Brown earned a double-double with 13 points to go with a game-high 14 rebounds
