SPARTANBURG, S.C. – After hitting two field goals and booming four punts over 50 yards against Chattanooga, VMI's
Ben Shrewsbury was named the Southern Conference Football Special Teams Player of the Week on Monday afternoon.
Shrewsbury's day began with a pair of punts in the first quarter, including a 53-yarder that was fielded at the Chattanooga 14-yard line. In the second, the junior connected on his first career field goal from 37 yards out to get VMI on the board. With time winding down in the quarter, Shrewsbury boomed a 57-yard punt that checked up out of bounds inside the one-yard line.
As VMI kept the game close in the fourth, Shrewsbury connected on his second field goal of the afternoon, making the contest a one-score game. The Jonesborough, Tennessee native would close out his day with a 51-yard punt that was downed at the Chattanooga 17.
For the year, Shrewsbury ranks sixth in the nation (FCS) with a punt average of 47.1 yards per kick.
