LEXINGTON, Va. – VMI Men's Swimming & Diving split its home finale, earning a solid victory over American at Goodall Pool at VMI Aquatic Center Saturday afternoon.
The Keydets took down the Eagles, 180-98, for their fourth win of the season, the most in a season since the 2020-21 campaign. VMI went toe-to-toe with Howard, falling to the Bison, 161-126. Before the tri-meet, the Keydets honored its three seniors:
Morgan Burd,
Ethan Griffith, and
Craig Swain.
Freshman
Jack Mills continued his successful collegiate debut by breaking his own 200 butterfly Rat and team records with a first-place time of 1:51.77, nearly two seconds faster than his previous feat. Mills secured another victory in the 100 freestyle with a blistering time of 46.13 and a third-place time of 50.29 in the 100 butterfly.
Sophomore
Matthew Picard also picked up a win, tallying a first-place mark of 21.40 in the 50 freestyle before a third-place finish in the 100 freestyle at 46.82. Freshman
Stephen Russell posted a 4:47.59 mark in the 500 freestyle for the Keydets' fourth individual victory while freshman
Caleb Wolf followed right behind in second place at 4:48.06.
Recording a second-place time of 51.80 in the 100 breaststroke was sophomore
Sam Castle before securing third place in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:57.09. In his final home meet, Griffith picked up second place in the 200 breaststroke at 2:09.88 and third place in the 200 IM at 1:58.21.
On the one-meter boards,
Lane Jones tallied second place with a score of 229.10 followed by a
Ryder Creal third-place score of 226.55.
The 200 freestyle relay group consisting of Mills, Picard, Castle, and
Sam Calder closed out the evening with a second-place mark of 1:24.98.
Next Up
The Keydets take a short trip across the street to Washington & Lee for the final dual meet of 2025 on Saturday, January 25. VMI seeks its fifth win of 2024-25 which would be the most since the 2018-19 season when the Keydets nabbed six victories.
